Frequently Asked Questions

I notice that each skein of yarn is not exactly the same, why is that?

Hand dyed yarn is an art, done by hand and not be machine. Even yarn in the same dye pot can have differences, depending on how much of a color a skein absorbs. Each skein will be unique. However,I try to ship multiple skein orders with skeins that are as similar as possible. If I feel I do not have enough skeins that match well enough for 1 project, I will email you and let you know and you can decide what to do in that case.

If yarn is machine washable, is it dryable too?

In most cases it is, according to the mill, however, I always recommend drying flat for knitted items to prevent snagging . And this practice extends the life of the garment

Do your colors fade in the sun?

The dye I use is one of the most colorfast dyes on the market so sun bleaching is minimal. But like anything with color, over time, the sun could have an effect on it if left in the sun for long stretches.

Why do you have small batches of yarn on your website?

I sell the majority of yarn to local yarn shops, where I encourage you to go and visit and see and feel and purchase your Scarlet Fleece Yarn. They purchase yarn in large batches, enough for sweaters. What I am selling are overages and and singles left over from batches that are wholesaled.

Can I purchase sweater batches from you?

Yes, but I will first check to see if any yarn shop has in stock the yarn that you are looking for. If no one has it in stock, I will dye to order. I would require a 50% deposit and it will take about 4-6 weeks. If interested in a sweater batch or kit, please email me your request.

How do I knit with Hand dyed yarn?

Because hand-dyed yarns vary greatly from batch to batch, skein to skein, and even within the skein, for any project requiring multiple skeins of any hand-dyed yarns, you should alternate skeins every few rows to get best results. The next best technique is to alternate skeins for the last inch of so of each skein while starting a new skein, to at least make the transition a little more seamless. We match all skeins with this recommendation in mind, as finding two hand-dyed skeins that are identical enough that the transition would be invisible is nearly impossible.

What is included in a sweater kit?

A sweater kit will include the sleeved pattern and the number of skeins required to complete the sweater size requested.

Do you have a physical store I can visit?

No, I dye in a private dye studio on my farm. I supply many wonderful yarn shops across the country. For a list, see our Retail Shops page on the main site.
